But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33
As part of His famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addressed the common questions each of us faces in order to survive. How am I going to meet my needs? Will I have food and drink? Will I have clothes to wear?
Addressing these questions, Jesus said, ‘Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you’. In essence, Jesus was cautioning us not to worry about these human concerns and to instead place our greatest priority on seeking God’s kingdom.
How do we seek the kingdom of God first? We do so by desiring God’s will for our lives above all else. We do so by offering everything we do to God as an act of worship. We do so by surrendering our will to Him, wanting not what we will, but what God wills.
We seek first the kingdom of God by putting every other demand upon us in its proper place. Yes, we are called to be faithful to our family responsibilities, but God comes before our family. We are to be hardworking employees, but we seek first the kingdom of God, not the kingdom of the boss.
Yes, we are to be active citizens of our nation, but our primary citizenship is in heaven. Thus, we seek God’s will above that of our country or political party.
Jesus promises that if we put God first in all things and seek to live according to His revealed righteousness, then every other part of life will be put in good order.
NUMBER ONE: When you make the kingdom of God the first thing in all your endeavours, life will bow to you on every side.
