Jesus also said: The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when a woman mixes a little yeast into three batches of flour. Finally, all the dough rises. Matthew 13:33 (CEV)
In our text today, Jesus is inviting us to imagine the amazing properties of a little yeast: it can make a dough rise so that it bakes into wonderful bread. Like yeast, only a small expression of the kingdom of God in our lives can make an incredible impact on the lives and culture of the people around us.
Kingdom citizens have a choice. We can withdraw and live separate lives from our surrounding environments or we can choose to influence and bless those environments by encouraging values and behaviours of justice, mercy, and peace.
Yeast is, at first, not very noticeable. The word in our verse that says that yeast is ‘mixed into’ can also mean ‘hidden in’. Our best influence is often through quiet actions of service and love by which we are not drawing attention to ourselves.
Yeast has a purpose of interacting with dough. We have a purpose of living out the values of the kingdom of God as we interact with the people, institutions, and communities where we are. By the power of the Spirit, we can have amazing influence for the glory of God.
NOTE: You must work towards influencing those that come around you for a positive outcome. Influence multitudes for Jesus.
