Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Hebrews 10:25
One of the first acts in Jesus’ ministry was to establish a community of believers, the disciples. These thirteen men, including Jesus, transformed the world with the good news of the kingdom of God. Throughout His ministry, Jesus modelled and taught about life in this new kind of community.
In the kingdom of God, we don’t do life and ministry alone. Community is God’s plan for changing the world. Jesus was completely capable of preaching, teaching, and healing by Himself. It is not as if Jesus needed anyone to help Him. Nevertheless, God has designed us to need each other, and Jesus lived this out by taking along twelve friends.
Being in a loving community helps us in many ways: We have friends to encourage us when we feel down; we learn to love as Jesus loved; it helps us to stay committed to our Christian faith; and we can equally be ourselves. Community also helps us to stay obedient to God. Jesus commanded us to love one another, just as He has loved us. The only way to love others is to live in community.
There are many more benefits of being involved in Christian community, but one of the best is that Jesus is uniquely present when we gather. And anywhere Jesus is, is a good place to be.
